Architect of Record & Team

HOK designed NRG Stadium, a world-class sports and entertainment venue located in Houston, Texas, in collaboration with Hernes Architects, while STOA, an associate architect of Hernes Architects, provided technical drawings and performed Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) reviews. STOA’s contribution played a crucial role in ensuring the highest quality and functionality during the stadium’s design and construction.

Design Choices

Completed in 2002 for $352 million, NRG Stadium’s design showcases a distinctive retractable roof that opens or closes in just seven minutes, enabling maximum adaptability to weather conditions and other factors. The cable system that supports the roof is one of the largest in the world, and it can be adjusted in multiple ways to offer shade, light, and ventilation as required.

One of the most notable features of NRG Stadium is its seating configuration, which places 44,000 of its 71,795 seats along the sidelines, offering fans an unparalleled view of the field. The stadium also boasts 187 luxury suites, each with its own private lounge, restroom, and catering facilities. In addition, multiple club-level areas offer premium amenities and services.
